Seniors
Katie Quinn and
Ryan Mattern were the outstanding seniors recognized at the October school board meeting.
Katie Quinn, daughter of Michael and Noreen Quinn of Lake Ariel has taken challenging courses, participated in community and extracurricular activities. Recently chosen to represent Western Wayne as the “Scholar of the Year’’ for the NEIU 19 program, Katie has excelled in 4 Advanced Placement courses (English Language, Chemistry, U.S. Government and Politics, and Calculus) as well as Spanish IV.
She has distinguished herself in FBLA as this year’s local chapter president as well as Region 22 president, and competed at the regional, state, and national level, placing in the top three nationally for the past two years. She has played trombone in the band for four years, participating in PMEA District 9 band and serving as band president in 2009. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the National Business Honor Society, and student council.
Katie is also an accomplished athlete, running track and field, placing 5th in the 2009 AA Districts for both 300 meter hurdles, and the 4 x 800 meter relay. On the tennis court, she placed 1st for doubles and 3rd for singles in 2009.
Her school activities are only a part of Katie’s schedule; she is active in the St. Thomas More Youth Group, serving as a lector, altar server, and religious education teacher. She earned the Bronze Award as a Girl Scout and is co-chair of the Wayne County Youth Advisory Committee. Her other interests include dance, having taken ballet and tap lesson for 14 years, and piano as well as alpine and cross country skiing, swimming, and kayaking.
Katie plans to attend a four-year university majoring in political science.

Ryan Mattern, son of Brian and Michelle Mattern of Hamlin has taken advantage of many academic opportunities including four Advanced Placement courses (English Language, Biology, Calculus, and US Government and Politics). He also completed dual enrollment courses in English and government. Ryan has participated in the gifted program for seven years.
He recently completed his Eagle Scout award and has served as president of his parish youth group for two years. Ryan is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities including FBLA, National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, environmental forum, computer fair, political science club, and tennis.
He plans to attend a four-year university majoring in engineering.
