Abby Carmody, Senior Class President and James Tinklepaugh, Student Council President

Recognized at November School Board Meeting

Abby, daughter of Colleen and William Carmody of Waymart, highlighted her many experiences as a student, athlete, leader, and club member at Western Wayne. Of particular note is her talent in the visual arts. She has won many Key Awards in the Scholastic Art contest each year, placed first in Pennsylvania in visual arts in the PTA Reflections contest, and been a Scranton Times calendar contest winner for two years. As a junior, she was a WVIA Art Student of the Month and last spring was voted the District Ten Congressional Art Award recipient; one of her favorite pieces is displayed in the capital in Harrisburg.

Currently captain of the cross-country team, Abby holds two district medals and earned a trip to the state competition in Hershey as well as Runner of the Year for the past three years. She also plays basketball, making the varsity team as a freshman and was awarded the Coach’s Award for two years. She also made the District Two Championship Team for Track and Field.

As a member of FBLA for four years, Abby earned two awards at regional and state competitions and earned a second place at TSA states.  She is a National Honor Society member and treasurer of the National Art Honor Society, as well as president of SADD.

Abby plans to attend a four-year college to major in environmental or graphic art design.

James, son of Joseph and Kathleen Tinklepaugh of Lake Ariel, highlighted his challenging academic schedule of Advanced Placement courses including English, Spanish, government, and calculus. He has participated in many school organizations including FBLA, fencing, SADD, marching band, multicultural club, local history club, political science club, and mock trial in which he earned both Best Advocate Award and Best Witness Award. He also served as freshman class president. James is a member of the cross country team.

Outside of school, James has been an Assistant and Senior Patrol Leader in the Boy Scouts and is working on his Eagle Scout Award. He plans to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serve at least eight years, and then attend college to major in education and political science.
