FCCLA Heads to National Competition 

The Western Wayne Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated in the 2010 Pennsylvania FCCLA State Leadership Conference and STAR Competitions from March 17th to 19th, 2010 held at Seven Springs Resort in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Nine Western Wayne students competed against 375 students from 68 school districts across Pennsylvania.  Five will go on to national competition. Western Wayne competed in the following events: Focus on Children, Career Investigation, Life Event Planning, and Illustrated Talk.

In the Focus on Children category, Cody Burke (junior), Courtney McDonald and Katie Getz (sophomores) presented on the topic of Bicycle Safety and came in first place, winning gold medals and receiving an invitation to compete in the National FCCLA Leadership Conference, being held in Chicago, Illinois from July 4th to 8th.

In the Life Event Planning category, sophomores Nina Fumanti and Morgan Franc presented on the topic of Planning a Wedding and came in first place, winning gold medals and also receiving an invitation to compete in the National FCCLA Leadership Conference.

In the Career Investigation category, senior Felicia Piccolo presented on the topic of Bridal Consultant and won a gold medal.

In the Illustrated Talk category, Ellen Clauss (sophomore), Tanya Harty (freshman) and Dan Fernandez (senior) presented on the topic of Internet Safety and came in second place, winning silver medals.

Cody Burke, Courtney McDonald and Katie Getz received scholarships totaling $18,000 from Sullivan University for their outstanding work and 100% grade in the Focus on Children category.

Also, the Western Wayne FCCLA Chapter won awards for participation in the following National FCCLA Programs: “Student Body” (Nutrition), “STOP the Violence”, “Families First”, “Community Service” and “F.A.C.T.S.” (Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety).  The club also received the “Give Me Ten” membership award and the “25% Membership Participation in National Programs” award.

Mr. Jim Kobeski, Club Advisor and Western Wayne FACS Teacher and Mrs. Colleen Carmody, Western Wayne FACS Teacher, attended the trip with the students.
