Since senior Abby Carmody of Waymart intends to study environmental design in college she decided to incorporate that interest into her senior project, creating a “sustainability” mural for the district’s new environmentally-friendly EverGreen Elementary School in Hamlin. She used artifacts such as a wooden riser, a desk top, a locker door, a pencil sharpener, and a teeter-totter from the recently closed Hamlin and Lake Ariel schools to create the mural. Abby cleaned the items with organic solutions and painted them with eco-friendly paint. Over the past year, she spent close to 70 hours collecting, cleaning, painting, and constructing the display. A legend on the mural explains where each item originated. Abby officially presented her project to the community at EverGreen’s Open House at the end of September.
