April's Outstanding Seniors 

Outstanding Seniors Recognized at School Board Meeting

Joshua Gershey and Courtney Kromko were honored at the April school board meeting for their high school accomplishments.

Josh Gershey, son of Ms. Kathleen Gershey and Mr. Justin Gershey, both from Lake Ariel, has an avid love of music and the math/sciences. His senior schedule consists of challenging courses including 3D Mechanical Drawing, Computer Programming IV, and Calculus. As a junior, he earned college credit for his AP English Language course.

Throughout his high school years, he has participated in marching band (three years), two years as the percussion section leader, two years in jazz band and pit orchestra, as well as Marywood Honors and County Band. Josh has participated in PMEA District and Regional Band, and District Orchestra placing second at Regional Orchestra.

Josh has competed in FBLA, taught robotics at the 6th grade science camp, and competed in the NEIU Reading Competition each year since seventh grade. This year he participated in the Technology Students Association and Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science and will compete at both state competitions.

In his free time, Josh can be found practicing the drums and piano. In summer 2010, Josh competed at the National Fine Arts Festival in Detroit, Michigan in the categories of Christian Band and Worship Team.

He has been accepted into the United States Navy Nuclear Operations Field and will pursue a career in nuclear science.

Courtney Kromko, daughter of Robert and Christine Kromko of Waymart, thanked both the Board of Education and her teachers, promising to make her school, parents, and community proud as she continues in her education. Courtney has been on the distinguished honor roll throughout high school; her senior schedule includes AP Government, Honors Physics, and Calculus.

Courtney is an active member of the school community including National Honor Society (three years), FBLA (four years), SADD/TFY (four years), and Student Council (one year). In the wider community she has volunteered at a soup kitchen, coached multiple sports camps including gym rats, round ball and, and U-6 soccer in the Wildcat Soccer Club for her senior project.

A multi-sport athlete, expecting to earn 12 varsity pins before graduating, Courtney holds the school record for assists in soccer as well as having been a starter for four years, captain for one year, a three-time district medalist, and a four-time Lackawanna League All-Star selection. She also played basketball and ran track and field for Western Wayne, earning numerous medals at the local, district, and region level including being named nationally ranked as the freshman of the year in the triple jump and breaking the school record.

Courtney plans to major in psychology and minor in education at the University of Massachusetts, and intends to continue her track and field career at the Division I level.
